I am looking for a new video card to put into a new system I am going to build. I have heard good things about the ASUS 8800gt 512mb TOP. Now I hear they have a new card that has 1gb of ram for not much more. Well I am all down for more mem, but the HSF looks lacking to me. The HSF does not cover the memory modules from what I can see. I am a little worried about overclocking results right out of the box.

Does anyone have any input on this card? also should I do SLI?
this is the system I am building:
-ASUS P5E mobo
-ASUS EN8800GT/HTDP/1G/A GeForce 8800GT
-ABS Tagan BZ Series BZ800 watt
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
-GeIL Evo One 4GB PC2 8500
-SAMSUNG 245BW 24" monitor

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s

Yeah, not sure about how well that one performs and I am kinda surprised no one else is making a 1GB 8800gt. The heat sink IMO doesn't look like it would do well, but looks can be deceiving. You have an active air cooling over the mem chips. You could also put on some mem heat sinks that would most likely help out in the longevity of the card it's self. Only real way to find out would be to purchase it and test it out.Q: What do you think about most during the day?

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
If it were me, I would get a single 8800GTX.
It all really depends on what you want to get out of it and what you are going to be using it for. Say for instance if you are gaming and specifically playing Crysis, a single 8800GTX would be fine.
Now if you looking for a good HD card for a great price and can still give you that great performance I would say get 2 EVGA 512MB 8800GT's.Q: What do you think about most during the day?

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
If you got the money get 2 8800GT's for games like crysis, SLI is the difference between low FPS and a playable game. Especially at 1920x1200 or higher where SLI works the best. Look at the reviews posted by me in this site.
Sure they are GTX's but you will get the idea of SLI scaling in many games.

These guys are making one too, along with a similar heatsink configuration.
The heatsink in their reviews does a MUCH better job of cooling.
Ive emailed both Palit and Asus asking if it would be possible to purchase their heatsinks seperately from the cards, for install onto my current 8800GTs.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
SLi doesn't give you always 100% performance increase that's what i meant by scaling. It depends on each game and there limitations.

The above review should help with SLI.
As for Crysis yeah SLi isn't perfect with it, however it's a lot better than a single card believe me

I am reading about all the 1gb cards I am just now hearing about. I will eventually pick one, just waiting for newegg.com to get some parts back in stock.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
It doesn't provide much of a performance boost with the extra memory, just some food for thought there.

Yeah I think 2gb is fine. The GeIl Black Dragon mem sounded really good. I really want the 2gb Corsair Dominator though.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
? I'm talking about how there is not much a performance boost with the 1Gb 8800GT cards over the 512mb 8800GT cards. See benchmarks here from Firingsquad and here from [H]ardocp.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
Oh ok. Well I read some reviews and it still looks like the ASUS performed pretty good compared to others. What do you think of the 8800GTS G92 core?

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
Great cards. I should point out though that while there was little performance boost in those benchmarks, it does seem odd to me. Maybe some thing like oblivion with texture mods would take better advantage of the extra memory to show a performance difference.

Ok here it is. This is the gear I decided to go with. I was just about to hit the complete button and go ahead and get 2x 8800GTX, but decieded against it. Tell me what you think. Also does the SLi bridge come with the video cards or mobo?
INTEL Q6600 2.4G
GEIL 2gb 8500
ASUS P5E X38 mobo+
Samsung 24" 5MS monitor
2x EVGA 8800GT 512Mb SLi
ABS BZ800 watt

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
Crysis can eat a shit load of video memory too, but to get that high it's usually not playable anyway (very high settings)

I thought it was only Nforce motherboards that even could use SLI like the 680i, 780i series of boards.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
Doesn't mean it supports SLI, it has to say it supports SLI to work
.
From what i heard there is a hack for Geforce 7 cards but not 8 As far as i know.
The board does support two AMD cards though.
So if you want SLI you're gunna need a NForce 680i or a 780i.
To quote other forumsOne word of caution on the P5E though, if you plan on running SLi the board doesn't support it, only ATI crossfire.
I found this out as I have the P5E and was planning on getting myself another 8800GTS, I emailed ASUS as my board never shipped with an SLi bridge connector, and was informed of it not being SLi compatible by ASUS.

Re: ASUS 8800GT 1gb ?'s
ok I am sending the P5E back to newegg once it gets here. I have already ordered the EVGA 780i mobo overnighted that way i can get going here
