    Playing around with Vista today

Some people seem to have such huge issues with Vista. In the beginning with beta of course I saw some issues. But since then I have been loving it.

Change some to lots and you would be much closer to the truth. The problems arise when you start installing a wide variety of applications. Also the UAC complaints and some just don't like the new UI, but those are just matters of personal preference as opposed to actual bugs like with app compatibility issues.

This was actually one of my best installs yet. All my other installs were on partitioned drives and that seemed to cause lots of issues. With it all on it's own HD it installed nicely, it even runs smoother. But the issue I found was that even with a Gig of ram It just did not like to run all the apps like it should. Just seemed slow and I am sure another Gig of ram would clear up that issue.

2142 actually looked better under Vista. That may be because of a different driver than XP. But the mem lag I got was horrid. HD drive light was going nuts as well so I know it was trying to use pagefiles for all that extra it needed.

Yeah vista and 2GB is a must IMO, hell BF2 and 2GB is a must let alone 2142 . The loading times, and paging to HD got cut down to a fraction when i moved to 2GB long ago.

I also recommend moving to a dual-core cpu for Vista. The tweaked scheduler didn't like to say... run winamp and play WoW at the same time unless I turned the priority up on winamp. Oh, upgrade to the 64-bit Vista, you'll run into compatibility problems :bleh2:

I actually have plans to upgrade to a Q6600 GO and no on the 64-bit......just not enough support. I also want to have at least 4 gig. Just cause I can!!

Yeah when i said compatability i was refering to 32bit version. I'd like the 64bit version but the drivers are apparently bad, and my wireless usb doesn't work with it...

I really wish I didnt have to goto Vista for DX10. I'd much rather just stick with XP for quite some time. Took me to about SP2 with XP, before I left Win2K.

I'd like to be able to play a game in DX10 without having to get a version of Vista. Home Premium just doesnt have everything that Im used to using like WinXP Pro does, then I look at it and I cant really drop cash on the Ultimate version..

    Ehh.. Maybe one day.

Yeah and to think, M$ already has in the works for a new OS.

Allot of the currents updates I have seen them release has helped out allot. But I figure it's not going to be good solid running software for some time and the price that they are asking is just stupid IMO, especially since they have plans for a new OS already.

Almost makes me wonder if Vista will turn around to be like another "ME" version. Just the stop gap version to keep people (and companies) on MS software, until they can release something that will actually "woo" the people that need or want the features of the new OS.

    Well yeah, makes since.

Especially since they are already talking about a new OS.

Re: Playing around with Vista today

My biggest problem with Vista is compatibility. While the majority of the programs I use, there are some that either won't work at all or work with some annoying bugs. The game performance issues with Vista have been beaten to death, but I have some very annoying problems with older games, mostly related to horrible frame rates. Deus Ex, for example, takes a huge frame rate hit in Vista (keep in mind this games age, and you'll see that's mildly retarded). Audio problems are another big issue for me, because of Vista's overhauled audio subsystem current sound cards have a few issues with it... or at least, my X-Fi XtremeMusic does. And even in applications where the sound card itself isn't at fault, there are still audio issues because the programs don't mesh well with Vista's new audio subsystem.

There are few, if any major issues with Vista that stop me from using it, it's the large amount of smaller issues that begin to collect into a giant ball of annoyances and ultimately lead me to formatting and reinstalling XP. Maybe things will change after SP1 and some other updates... we'll see.
