Nvidia plans DirectX 10 cards for AGP slot

NVIDIA'S GEFORCE 7600 GS, its AGP card, will get a new follower, cleverly codenamed G84 AGP.

This card will be a Direct X 10 chip aimed at AGP upgrade market, as you have not been able to buy new AGP systems for a while now.

It is an interesting choice as but shows the value of this legacy market. The card is scheduled for April and this means that AGP upgrade market will get a DirectX 10 after all.

this is good news to alot of people because some people dont have pci express, now people wont have to buy a new motherboard just for graphics

At this point there is not real reason not to swtich to PCIe once a user upgrades.

but do we have a reason to switch to pcie?
the bandwidth of agp x8 is not used by any video card.

well... the thing is... if you are still using a mobo that has AGP.. the odds are your CPU will suck to much to really feed the new AGP card.

i still see no reason for pcie at this point and i think alot of people got together and decided to force people onto this new platform.
i guess that's how we progress.
i have 3 different agp cards i use for specific things and they work fine.

well.... it's not that there is anything really wring with agp... but its just not really around anymore... given that pci-e has been around a while now its not like its forced on anyone. By now if your going to upgrade your going to do a full system overhaul and what difference does it make now.

my next system will not be agp.
i may buy another agp video card if there is some dx10 game i needed to play that would run fine with that setup.
i dont think we are going to see a dx10 game that isnt an xbox port for quite a while anyway.

If a user is currently using an AGP and they are looking to upgrade why not go the PCIe? Most people upgrade go forwards and not backwards.

because you can upgrade your video card without also upgrading ram, cpu, motherboard, etc..

I am talking more about a full upgrade and not just a GPU upgrade.

ok well i agree with you that anyone buying a complete new system it should be pcie.
this is not because pcie is superior in bandwidth at this time.

Well you don't see an AGP version of the 8800GTX.

There have been rumors of an AGP G80 not to far from now.... but any CPU still using agp is going to nerf the full potential of it.

Like you guys said, a bottleneck is definetly gonna happen. A lot AGP mobos still using single cores slots.

Re: Nvidia plans DirectX 10 cards for AGP slot

Another problem is the issue of incompatibility of AGP boards with Vista with dual-core users. nForce3 mobo? Not gonna happen unless nVidia writes a new driver. ULi AGP patch is out, VIA patched theirs also...
