    IP Address Question

Hey guys, I posted this on Rage but thought I might get extra exposure if i posted here too:
    -----------------
I have a comcast high speed connection that comes into the house, connects to a modem, and then goes to a router, then to my computer. Is it best for my network if i have a private ip.. (ie: 192.168.1.etc) or should it be a public external ip? I heard something about bridged connections or something and began to question whether i had it set up correctly.

Also, if to my router for filesharing? right now i just connect another comp to it and join the workgroup and it works alright to an extent. However, sometimes the folders are finicky and when i put something in a shared folder on desktop A, Desktop B sees the files (albeit without the icons sometimes) but every now and then B can't execute the executable or copy the file to its desktop. (even though full permissions are set.) I'm getting a new router (the dlink gigabit wireless g gaming router) and am hoping that the problems will just go away with this superior router. But I was just wondering if i'm neglecting to do something crucial.

    Re: IP Address Question

I have never cam across that question about the IP stuff. I'll have to sleep on that to give you a fare answer.

For the file sharing, the new router should have a USB port on it which would be a great reason for you to get an external HD that is either USB or Ethernet. Being that you are going to have gigabit lan. Ethernet is gonna be my first choice. Had to many issues with the USB being very slow. As for the computers not communicating properly, I would have to say that that may be just the computers them selfs. Or....your router you currently have is a pile!

haha! you've got that right! it is a steaming pile...it crashes on me about every 30 minutes. I have to unplug it for 5 sec. then plug it back in...I've heard pretty much nothing but great reviews for this new router i'm getting. I think I may want to do one of the gigabit ports...lol

I have the new dlink wireless "N" router that has gigabit lan. Very Very nice router.

Now if only I could get my ISP to get my connection to work properly.

    Re: IP Address Question

Still having networking problems after I installed the new Dlink...Stability has improved 300% as I was able to stay connected for more than 30 minutes at a time (havent' dropped once since I put it in last night ) I'm just having problems with shared folders. Computer A can see B's files, B can see A's files, but its very flaky on who can actually modify/use/see what. I have the permissions set to "everybody" and FULL access on each shared folder. wth

Edit: Lanned with a friend last night (Warhammer on my two computers using my DLink. I must say we didn't have one hiccup or problem. Connection was blazing fast and stable
