I noticed that i can close explorer.exe and my computer still runs, there just
isnt a program to handle the icons or to organize the open programs. Is there
some kind of program that replaces this and maybe has more features, like a mac
style or something? Just wondering because i know there is style XP which just
changes how the PC looks. Thanks.

Not that I am aware of.
Now if you just looking for a completely different look all together you could use this free program (http://www.windowsxlive.net). Makes it look and feel exactly like vista. Except you can still play your games and not have to mess with the "are you sure" BS.

There used to be some back in the day, Win98 was the last time I ever looked into it. I believe they are called shell replacements, and if they still exist I'd imagine they'd be more stripped down rather than adding more. If you want to change how windows looks, check out http://www.stardock.com/, I'm sure you can find some themes to make windows look like a mac.

There are a couple of shell replacements out there, one of them being LiteStep (http://www.litestep.net/). I've used LiteStep on WinXP a few times in the past, and it's a neat alternative, but I ultimately always find my way back to Explorer. Maybe it's because I'm so used to Explorer from using it for so long, but for some reason LiteStep and other shell replacements just don't do it for me in the long run.
You can find links to and information on some other shell replacements here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_shell_replacement
