GeForce Is Made for Gaming, CMP Is Made to Mine

Posted on 02/19/202102/22/2021 By Mike
News

We’re limiting the hash rate of GeForce RTX 3060 GPUs so they’re less desirable to miners and launching NVIDIA CMP for professional mining.

We are gamers, through and through. We obsess about new gaming features, new architectures, new games and tech. We designed GeForce GPUs for gamers, and gamers are clamoring for more.

Yet NVIDIA GPUs are programmable. And users are constantly discovering new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. Mining cryptocurrency is one of them.

With the launch of GeForce RTX 3060 on Feb. 25, we’re taking an important step to help ensure GeForce GPUs end up in the hands of gamers.

Halving Hash Rate

RTX 3060 software drivers are designed to detect specific attributes of the Ethereum cryptocurrency mining algorithm, and limit the hash rate, or cryptocurrency mining efficiency, by around 50 percent.

That only makes sense. Our GeForce RTX GPUs introduce cutting-edge technologies — such as RTX real-time ray-tracing, DLSS AI-accelerated image upscaling technology, Reflex super-fast response rendering for the best system latency, and many more — tailored to meet the needs of gamers and those who create digital experiences.

To address the specific needs of Ethereum mining, we’re announcing the NVIDIA CMP, or, Cryptocurrency Mining Processor, product line for professional mining.

CMP products — which don’t do graphics — are sold through authorized partners and optimized for the best mining performance and efficiency. They don’t meet the specifications required of a GeForce GPU and, thus, don’t impact the availability of GeForce GPUs to gamers.

For instance, CMP lacks display outputs, enabling improved airflow while mining so they can be more densely packed. CMPs also have a lower peak core voltage and frequency, which improves mining power efficiency.

Creating tailored products for customers with specific needs delivers the best value for customers. With CMP, we can help miners build the most efficient data centers while preserving GeForce RTX GPUs for gamers.

ASUS GeForce RTX 3070/3060 Ti Megalodon Series Teaser

Posted on 01/27/202101/29/2021 By Mike
News

ASUS China posted pictures of a new GeForce RTX 30 series.

Megalodon appears is a China-exclusive model. It features a triple-fan cooler design which borrowed the aesthetics from the ASUS STRIX series. The card looks a lot cheaper though,  with the metallic shroud replaced with plastic. It actually looks like a hybrid between TUF and STRIX, judging from the quality of the cooler.

ASUS announced that the Megalodon series will launch under RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti models, both being the only GA104 cards in the current NVIDIA Ampere lineup.

Design-wise we have standard display connectors (3x DP + 1x HDMI) with a single 8-pin power connector. The only picture of teh backplate that was posted revealed that the card is powered by a single 8-pin power connector. We are not sure if this RTX 3060 Ti model only, or if it applies to RTX 3070 too. In such a case, this model is obviously not meant for overclocking.

ASUS announced that the card will be available on the Chinese market next month.

RTX 3060 with larger graphics memory than RTX 3080? Nvidia clarifies

Posted on 01/15/2021 By Mike
News

The Geforce RTX 3060 offers 2.0 GBytes of VRAM more than the nominal flagship Geforce RTX 3080. Why is that?

According to Nvidia, it’s not just the size of the video memory that matters.

As part of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021, Nvidia presented the Geforce RTX 3060 last Tuesday. The special thing about the so far smallest graphics card from the line-up of the RTX-3000 series based on the ampere architecture is the very large video memory of 12.0 GB.

Video memory raises questions: In the comments below our article, many of you understandably asked what the point is to equip the RTX 3060 with larger graphics memory than the RTX 3080. Nvidia answered questions during a Q&A session.

RTX 3060 with 12.0 GB VRAM – why?

The answer is relatively simple: A 192-bit wide memory interface was chosen, which in turn only allows 6.0 and 12.0 GBytes of video memory. In order to ensure the best balance between performance and price, the decision was made in favor of 12.0 Gbyte GDDR6 VRAM.

Furthermore, it is not only the size of the graphics memory that matters. The RTX 3080 is only equipped with 10.0 GB VRAM, but with fast GDDR6X modules (19.0 Gbps, effective 19.0 GHz) including a 320 bit connection. This results in a memory bandwidth of 760 GB/s.

The RTX 3060 on the other hand comes to 360 GB/s with GDDR6 modules (15.0 Gbps, effective 15.0 GHz) and the aforementioned 192-bit interface. Thus, the data transfer on the RTX 3080 is already more than twice as fast due to the memory connection alone. In addition, the GPU is much faster anyway and can therefore process the data faster, which means that the transfer rate is better on the road.

RTX 3060 versus RX 6700 (XT)?

Nvidia did not reveal whether possible new graphics cards from AMD are also a reason for the large video memory of the RTX 3060. Nevertheless, the expected 12.0 GB GDDR6 of the upcoming, new Radeon mid-range, which will most likely go by the names RX 6700 and RX 6700 XT, might have played a role in the decision.

Nvidia RTX 4000: Allegedly almost twice as many cores as RTX 3000

Posted on 01/02/202101/15/2021 By Mike
News

According to one rumor, Nvidia’s next-gen graphics cards will offer up to 18,432 cores, almost twice as many as the RTX 3090.

The current generation of graphics cards in the form of AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 and Nvidia’s RTX 3000 is still hardly available, but the first rumors about the specifications of the next generation are already doing the rounds on the web.

Specifically, rough key data of a GPU based on Nvidia’s Ada-Lovelace architecture has surfaced. The basic design is supposed to be much more opulent than that of the current generation and thus offer more space for the arithmetic units.

Ada Lovelace
Nvidia traditionally names its architectures after famous mathematicians. Ampere, for example, is named after André-Marie Ampère, and Turing after Alan Mathison Turing. Ada Lovelace was also a British mathematician who is also considered by some historians to be the first real programmer. The programming language Ada is also named after her.

The latest information comes from the leaker kopite7kimi ( @ kopite7kimi ), known in hardware circles , who, for example, predicted the specifications of Nvidia’s current amp architecture very accurately in mid-2019.

This is how the AD102 chip would look compared to its predecessors:

Lovelace (RTX 4000) *Chip: AD102Manufacturing: 5nmCores: 18,432TFLOPS: approx. 66Release: 2022
Ampere (RTX 3000)Chip: GA102Manufacturing: 8nmCores: 10,752TFLOPS: approx. 37Release: 2020
Turing (GTX 1600 / RTX 2000)Chip: TU102Manufacturing: 12nmCores: 4,608TFLOPS: approx. 16Release: 2018
Pascal (GTX 1000)Chip: GP102Manufacturing: 16nmCores: 3,840TFLOPS: approx. 12Release: 2016
* Information not confirmed

If the specifications are fairly accurate, we will see a massive increase in core count and theoretical computing power with Nvidia Ada Lovelace. The latter in turn is based to a not insignificant degree on the clock rate, for which 3DCenter assumes a very conservative 1.8 GHz.

What is actually going on with Nvidia Hopper?

The first rumors about the Hopper architecture emerged more than a year ago. It was supposed to make use of the so-called MCM (multi-chip module) design, also called chiplet design, for the first time.

So, we might see Nvidia Hopper a bit later and get an intermediate step with Lovelace. It was similar with Ampere and Turing.

Rumors should be treated with caution: Nevertheless, all this is mere speculation for the time being. For a long time, the experts assumed that the chips for RTX 3000 would mainly be manufactured by Samsung in a 7-nanometer process; in the end, it became an 8-nanometer process from Samsung. Furthermore, hardly anyone had a quasi-doubling of the CUDA cores on their radar.

Benchmark leaks: Even the cheapest RTX 3000 GPU is very fast

Posted on 11/29/202001/15/2021 By Mike
News

The first benchmarks of Nvidia’s new RTX 3060 Ti graphics card have now surfaced. They confirm the expected high gaming performance of the smallest RTX 3000 GPU for now.

The RTX 3060 Ti is said to deliver more ray tracing performance than the RTX 2080 Super with fewer ray tracing cores.

The rumors about the performance of the RTX 3060 Ti are supported in the first benchmark leaks. As Wccftech reports, the 3060 Ti is about 5 to 6 percent ahead of the RTX 2080 Super in 3D Mark. The RTX 3070 is also around 11 to 13 percent faster. In Ashes of the Singularity, the 3070 is eight percent ahead.

For the RTX 3060, a price of 399 USD is expected (at least officially), the release should take place on December 2nd. This would put it in the price range of the RX 5700 XT , which it should clearly beat. How well the card will be available and, above all, at what prices, remains to be seen in view of the general delivery difficulties with new hardware.

RTX 3060 Ti: Performance and specs

Videocardz backs this up with leaked press material showing the RTX 3060 Ti compared to the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Super.

The RTX 3060 Ti is supposed to be superior to the RTX 2080 Super in all aspects. (Image source: Videocardz)

Incidentally, the percentages do not come from Nvidia, but were added later according to Videocardz’s own statements.

RTX 3060 Ti Specs: Videocardz is more cautious about the specifications. In contrast to the release date, Nvidia has not yet officially confirmed this:

RTX 3090Shader: 10,496Clock: 1,395 / 1,695 MHzRT cores: 82Memory: 24.0 Gbytes GDDR6XTGP: 350 watts
RTX 3080Shader: 8,704Clock: 1,440 / 1,710 MHzRT cores: 68Memory: 10.0 GB GDDR6XTGP: 320 watts
RTX 3070Shader: 5,888Clock: 1,500 / 1,725 MHzRT cores: 46Memory: 8.0 GB GDDR6TGP: 220 watts
RTX 3060 Ti *Shader: 4,864Clock: 1,410 / 1,665 MHzRT cores: 38Memory: 8.0 GB GDDR6TGP: 180 to 220 watts
RTX 2080 SuperShader: 3,072Clock 1,650 / 1,815 MHzRT cores: 48Memory: 8.0 GB GDDR6TGP: 250 watts
* Information not confirmed

There is currently only one estimate of the price: Videocardz assumes a recommended retail price of 399 USD or less for the RTX 3060 Ti. How good (or bad) the RTX 3060 Ti will be available cannot yet be said.
